The city of Tacoma, Washington is a port city situated between Seattle, Olympia and Mount Rainier National Park. Based on its population, Tacoma is the second-largest city in the Puget Sound region and the third-largest city in the state of Washington.
Over the past few decades, downtown Tacoma has undergone some major developments to help revitalize the district. The Tacoma Link, which was the first modern electric light rail service in the state of Washington, was built as a more efficient form of public transportation for the citizens of Tacoma. Public transportation in Tacoma has since expanded to include buses, commuter rail and water ferries. The Thea Foss Waterway was also restored as an urban waterfront.
There are seven highways that run to or pass through Tacoma, offering easy transportation between Tacoma and the surrounding cities. These main highways are I-5, I-705, SR 7, SR 16, SR 163, SR 167 and SR 509. Most commuters travel along I-5 to reach either Seattle or Portland, Oregon.
Tacoma is home to a number of historic landmarks and cultural attractions, including Point Defiance Park, For Nisqually and Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium.
Tacoma Public Schools district contains 36 elementary schools, 11 middle schools and 5 high schools. The school district also contains and few options outside of traditional public schooling, including an alternative high school, a Science and Math Institute and a School of the Arts.
